The interview took place in 2018 in California, where the recreational use of cannabis had already been legalized.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, declared this Thursday in a interview with Full Send Podcast that, after participating in the 2018 Joe Rogan show —where he was seen smoking quietly marijuana—the US Government subjected him and his space exploration company to a year-long drug investigation.
“I got a lot of backlash, because it’s still illegal [to smoke marijuana] at the federal level,” Musk said. “Space X has contracts with the federal government, so our competitors were like, ‘Why aren’t they doing anything? Look at him shamelessly smoking weed on the Joe Rogan podcast.'”
However, it should be noted that the 2018 interview took place at Rogan’s studios in Los Angeles and that, by then, California had already legalized the recreational use of cannabis.
This did not seem to dissuade the authorities, since Musk assures that he was “tested for all kinds of drugs”.
The video of Musk smoking marijuana caused at that time that the price of Tesla stock briefly fell as much as 9%, reducing the value of the company by billions of dollars. This, according to the tycoon, forced him to assure his investors that he was not an addict.
Musk also revealed during the recent podcast that he has moved into a “very small” three-bedroom house in Boca Chica, Texas, where the SpaceX launch site is located.
This modest home, for only $45,000, surprises the tycoon’s friends, who “can’t believe” that he lives there.
